Melissa’s Summer Bucket List

Melissa’s Summer Bucket List

Summer, summer, summertime! We are approaching my favorite time of year – when the weather is warm hot and people are happier. There have been a few summers though, that have passed without really any significant memory. So this year, I made a small bucket list. Emphasis on small, because the more I put on there, the less I will do. Anyone else like that? Here are three things that if I get to do this summer, I will be one happy camper. (Fun fact: I don’t like camping.) Volunteer Besides talking about #TeamHuman, I live it too. Sometimes, I can get stuck in the regular “to-dos” of life and I want to take more opportunities this summer to help others. Go on at least 3 day-trips somewhere new. Learning about a new place, seeing and smelling new things…it’s just […]

Graduating Senior? Read this.

Graduating Senior? Read this.

Senior class, are you ready? No? Yikes. I know it can be a stressful time, but it is also a wonderful experience complete with laughs, tears, sweat and hopefully some fun. As graduation season approaches, here are some quotes to motivate the senior in your life, especially if it’s you! Memorize them, print them out, recite them daily, whatever you need to do to know you’re not alone and that you CAN do whatever you set out to do. No matter how insane the idea may seem now. Go for it! Don’t lose sight of the things that excite you. You are awesome for all of the things that make you who are. Celebrate it, own it and change the world with it. Think big. You’ll have to compromise along the way, but act with your big vision in mind. […]

10 Thoughtful Gifts for the High School Grad

Gift giving is an art – sometimes it’s the easiest thing in the world because you know the person so well, and sometimes it’s the most brain-wracking puzzle. Graduation gifts sometimes fall into the latter category because it’s hard not to get too cheesy, or take the lazy way and hand them a wad of cash. Here’s our list of thoughtful gifts that will give great value and a smile to your favorite college-bound student. 1. 5 Ways to Make Your Graduating Seniors Feel Appreciated

5 Ways to Make Your Graduating Seniors Feel Appreciated

Every day, I use an orange highlighter to check off my to-do list during work at Swift Kick HQ. It makes me smile to use it because where it came from means so much more than an average highlighter. I can still remember my friend Rachel, at my last club meeting ever, saying Did you notice?? The highlighter and sharpie in your graduate survival kit are orange!! That’s your favorite color! She was so excited to tell me that she knew my love for orange and remembered to personalize my senior gift, and that moment made the gift even better. This lone orange highlighter, 3 years later, continues to bridge the gap between my favorite student organization in college and my post-graduate life.  As you say goodbye to your graduating friends, make it a point to show them that they are […]

Handling Goodbyes: Make your Community Last Even After Members Leave

Handling Goodbyes: Make your Community Last Even After Members Leave

So it’s coming to that point of the year again…after all the stress of the spring semester classes and finals are over.  My Res-Life Staff is leaving me!  How can I possibly say goodbye to six unique individuals who have been a big part of my life as a first time res-life supervisor? Well, I can say goodbye by realizing that I do not actually have follow everything on the checklist that normally describes how people handle goodbyes. So… — I do not have to stop checking up on how these six individuals are growing. — I do not have to stop asking how these individuals’ new college experiences are going. — I do not have to stop having these individuals’ best interests at heart. 4 Ways Your Graduated Student Leaders Can Still Help Your Student Organization

4 Ways Your Graduated Student Leaders Can Still Help Your Student Organization

It’s graduation season! How do I know? Because my entire social newsfeed is filled with pictures of the graduating student leaders we’ve connected with over the past four years. A challenge every student activities department faces this time of year is the reminder that their student leaders turn over every two to four years. All the leadership and institution knowledge the educators imparted on their graduating seniors will have to be re-taught next year to a new group. Educators know, from the beginning, that at some point their little cubs will grow up and move on. That’s the point of college, and as much as we’d like to keep the best student leaders year after year, we also want to see them graduate and make a positive impact in the world. Graduation, however, doesn’t have to be the end of […]
