Melissa’s Summer Bucket List

Melissa’s Summer Bucket List

Summer, summer, summertime! We are approaching my favorite time of year – when the weather is warm hot and people are happier. There have been a few summers though, that have passed without really any significant memory. So this year, I made a small bucket list. Emphasis on small, because the more I put on there, the less I will do. Anyone else like that? Here are three things that if I get to do this summer, I will be one happy camper. (Fun fact: I don’t like camping.) Volunteer Besides talking about #TeamHuman, I live it too. Sometimes, I can get stuck in the regular “to-dos” of life and I want to take more opportunities this summer to help others. Go on at least 3 day-trips somewhere new. Learning about a new place, seeing and smelling new things…it’s just […]

3 Productive Ways to Procrastinate that Will Make You a Better Leader

3 Productive Ways to Procrastinate that Will Make You a Better Leader

Yeah, you heard me – I said productive ways to procrastinate. I just gave you your new favorite oxymoron. Ya welcome. Look at pictures of baby animals Stop what you’re doing. Google search “baby turtles.” Then go be more productive.  The science: Apparently, looking at baby animals improves your work performance. This seems to be because browsing pictures of puppies and kitties, and the like, makes you more careful and deliberate in your tasks. Why? There are a few theories. One theory says that since we tend to talk more slowly to babies, that same carefulness carries over to your work, which is triggered by seeing pictures of little ones. Another theory says that seeing baby animals triggers your need to be more careful when handling them. Once again, this carries over into your work. Why it makes you a better leader: Being […]

How Cedar Crest College RAs Raise The Tide

How Cedar Crest College RAs Raise The Tide

As an intern with Swift Kick, I learned about the Core Values and the their importance in every-day life. During staff meetings with my RAs here at Cedar Crest, I realize how each member of our team has used these Core Values without even knowing what they are. Recently they were planning out their Building Wide. (The Building Wide  is an event to which they invite every resident.) This year, they decided to host it as an outdoor event. In planning and hosting the Building Wide, each member of the team exemplified the core value of ‘Raise the Tide.’ Raise The Tide On April 29th, we had our building wide program. This is a program where all of the RAs get together and do something fun with the residents in our hall. The RAs practiced ‘Raise The Tide’ by working together […]

Self-Doubt in Student Leaders: Ways to Overcome Insecurity and Encourage Yourself

Self-Doubt in Student Leaders: Ways to Overcome Insecurity and Encourage Yourself

Students entering college face a transformative period in their lives. Going to university is many students’ first experience with completely independent everyday decision-making. Aside from going to class and making sure to eat, students are also facing enormously important internal hurdles. They are asking themselves questions about their values, their futures, and their identities. During this process, some students see leadership within their realm of opportunity. In my experiences, self-doubt pervades this driven group of students the most. I don’t believe this correlation is just coincidence. On top of academics, work, and social lives, higher education vigorously calls upon its students to take on leadership roles within their peer community. During orientation programs and involvement fairs, leadership transforms from a developmental skill into a mandate for a true/happy/good college experience. Want to have the best, most rewarding time during your stint at university? Lead […]

Graduating Senior? Read this.

Senior class, are you ready? No? Yikes. I know it can be a stressful time, but it is also a wonderful experience complete with laughs, tears, sweat and hopefully some fun. As graduation season approaches, here are some quotes to motivate the senior in your life, especially if it’s you! Memorize them, print them out, recite them daily, whatever you need to do to know you’re not alone and that you CAN do whatever you set out to do. No matter how insane the idea may seem now. Go for it! Don’t lose sight of the things that excite you. You are awesome for all of the things that make you who are. Celebrate it, own it and change the world with it. Think big. You’ll have to compromise along the way, but act with your big vision in mind. […]

Tips to de-stress at such a STRESSFUL time of the year!

Tips to de-stress at such a STRESSFUL time of the year!

You are almost there, friends! Finals are either here or right around the corner. I decided to put together some fun activities / tips to help you de-stress. I truly hope they help. In our book, First Year Student to First Year Success, we talk about getting “funstuck.” In other words, sometimes when you hit a mental wall and just can’t be productive anymore, all it takes is a little break. When you give your brain a rest from a problem, it starts to work on it on its own in a much more relaxed way. When you re-focus on the task, you might just magically have your answer. Now that’s a study tip! As my good friend Sabina reminded me, ‘Deep breaths and remember that you think best when you clear stress.’ Each of these are little ways you can […]
