Ah, autumn…the leaves are turning, the days are getting cooler, and we are finally beginning to recover from all of the Halloween candy. Here are a few tips and treats that we’ve gathered for you in the last month—but don’t worry, these won’t contribute to your sugar coma.

A man of many titles, UW-Madison’s Tom Templeton is the Orientation Assistant for the Center for First Year Experience, the Chief of Staff to the President of ASM (Associated Students of Madison), and the Public Relations Director for his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha.

Tom tells us, “A lot of my work in all three of my jobs includes putting out fires and promoting the great work the organization does. I do use social media to help do this, and I think as a general rule, the more students are connected via tools such as Twitter and Facebook and read the blogs and newspapers, the more engaged they are on campus.”

On his blog, Tom writes about his leadership activities, including efforts to build engagement at UW-Madison. Check it out to join in the discussion, or follow him on Twitter.

Highland Interactive Productions (HIP) is the student activities programming board at Georgia Highlands College. HIP is all about fun and entertainment, so its group tags—words like music, comedy, fun, and concerts—triggered recommendations to many incoming freshman at orientation last fall. The result was a 25% increase in participation at HIP’s student retreat.

According to HIP’s advisor, John Spranza, “When the time came for the retreat, we had 20 students attend…and 5 were brand new freshmen that had yet to attend a class!

So these five students were plugged in to the campus activity programming board before classes started, and became very active and valuable members of HIP during the course of that year… Something that I attribute directly to the use of Red Rover.”

We’ve added a few new admin features to help you make your Red Rover Directory’s landing page reflect the look of your institution’s existing online presence. Now you can replace the banner that appears throughout the Directory with the one used on your institution’s official website. You can also change the homepage image, which appears on the login page. By default, it includes text explaining how the Red Rover Directory works, but now you can modify or replace it with any image that will be relevant to your community.

Ready to customize your Directory? We’ve made a quick introduction video** to walk you through it. Have questions or need help? Drop us an email, and we’ll be happy to help.

On college campuses around the world, students celebrated the Halloween season by playing Humans vs. Zombies, and defending their campuses from legions of the undead. At New Mexico State University, the Student Government for Campus Residents organized the game this October, creating this video to raise awareness of the outbreak:

The Red Rover Student Directories for UW-Madison, San Antonio College, Georgia Highlands College, and John Jay College for Criminal Justice all list students who have “zombies” among their interests—further proof that the apocalypse is nigh.
