I’m a guy who loves really great quotes. This past year, I came across one that really spoke to me. It is a Gaelic Proverb that says, “Waves will rise on silent waters.”
I interpret it to mean that great things happen where you least expect them, too. There is always an opportunity for someone to do great things, and make a difference in others’ lives. They are words that speak to me about positivity and encouragement, especially as a student leader on my own campus. Student leaders raise the tide for their organizations on campuses; they seek to contribute to the greater good of the whole community. How can these student leaders maximize the contributions that they make? I’d say look toward the silent waters!
We all know that one person in our organization and have this thought: “I would have never thought when I first met them, that they would make such an impact on our team and do great things.” These are the members who, at first, only showed up to meetings and simply participated. They were part of the silent waters on your team. However, at one point, they were encouraged to help raise the tide for the organization.
I challenge all the student leaders to look towards the 1s and 2s on the dance floor, and give them the opportunity to get their 5 on and “raise the tide on silent waters” in the following ways:
- Make the members of your organization feel valued – let them know that you appreciate their dedication to the team by showing up to meetings and participating in events.
- Ask them how they think the organization can improve.
- Encourage them to take on positions that utilize their strengths.
Think of the last sporting event you went to, where everyone did the wave. Did you feel excited when the wave came to your section? Did you feel like you were part of a huge movement?
When the strengths of every member in an organization are being utilized and everyone is asked to raise the tide, a campus organization can maximize the impact that they make. Everyone will be working toward the same goal, in their own way. Every member will contribute to the success of the team. The waves created by the organization will be magnified tremendously. It will create a culture where all students feels welcomed, connected, and engaged (just like during the home football game you went to.)
