Last week, I talked about one huge benefit of communities is the brainstorming ability. But there’s a thousand and one reasons communities are great, so let’s explore another.
Communities give you those mini vacations you need to get through stress, work, and life.
Take a moment and imagine your college career without the social aspect. Yeah. I wouldn’t go either. Now think about finals (sorry). Can you remember a time you were really stressed during finals, but it led to a great conversation or bonding moment with someone else stuck in the library or study room? You probably can.
Communities not only help us get work done, and do awesome things, they also help us take little breaks without having to do anything. Just by being surrounded by people you feel connected to and welcomed around, every day is filled with moments of laughter, conversation, and little escapes. I cannot count the number of times I had a blast during the most stressful times of year because the struggle brought the community closer.
Want to utilize this idea past simply friends bonding out of desperation? At Fordham, one of the organizations on campus serves hot chocolate in the library lobby around finals time. This is a purposeful community moment, in which some members decided to support and lift the rest of their “college family.”
So let’s build communities, so we can build each other up, and give each other a break.
