Major: Early Childhood

Leadership position: Member of Student Government and Event Leader for Council For Student Activities

How do you define leadership?

Leadership, defined in the dictionary as “the action of leading a group of people or an organization.” This to me means being responsible, communicating with others, being committed, being able to listen to what everyone has to say, being dependable. As a leader, you should be motivated to be the best you can be and being able to take the initiative.

What first inspired you to become a student leader/get your current position?

What inspired me to become a student leader is my current adviser of Council for Student Activities, Susan Brodie. Before I became involved in any clubs on campus, I worked in the student life center on campus, where Susan was the secretary. She told me how she thought I should get involved in council for student activities. This inspired me because seeing other people wanting me to succeed was motivating to me. Another thing that inspired me to become a student leader was seeing people getting involved on campus with different clubs because during high school I wasn’t very involved, and I wanted this to change.

What is one experience (any kind) you think everyone should have?

One experience I think everyone should have is living in a dorm when in college. My First year in college, I moved into a dorm and the only time I had talked to my roommate was about a month before moved in through an awkward conversation on Facebook. During my first semester of college, I moved into a different room because things didn’t work with my first roommate. Living in a dorm teaches you many things about yourself and the surrounding people. Even though during my first semester at college, there were many times I called my mom telling her how much I just wanted to be home, I wouldn’t change a thing about my college experience thus far. It’s taught me that you may not always feel comfortable in a situation, but everything happens for a reason. If I hadn’t lived in a dorm, I wouldn’t have met some of the people I know now and hope to have a friendship with passed college.

What was your number one take-away from DFT?

My number one take away from Dance Floor Theory was when Tom talked about blender events. Being both a member of Student Government and a Event Leader of Council For Student Activities on campus, this applied to me. Creating different ways to get students interested and involved. I believe that being a leader on my campus, it’s my job to get students involved. Getting students involved is important for creating the best opportunities for our campus and individual students.

What is your go-to happy song?

There are too many good songs just to pick one. Whenever I’m stressed out or doing homework, I will put on either Luke Bryan Pandora station or Taylor Swift station. Putting on anything Taylor Swift reminds me of the two times I saw her live in concert! (She’s amazing live)
